Zipline FAQs

Have questions about ziplines that you need answered? We’ve got you covered. Review some of the most frequently asked ziplining questions and our answers below.

What Is a Zipline?

A zipline is a sloped cable system that lets you glide from one point to another while clipped into a harness and a trolley.

How Does Ziplining Work?

You’ll gear up in a harness and helmet, clip into a trolley on the cable, then ride the line while gravity and the course’s braking system manage your motion.

Most tours begin with a safety briefing and a practice segment to show you how their system works.

How Long Does Ziplining Take?

Zipline time depends on the course’s length, how fast you’re going, and how many platforms you stop at.

Most zipline operators will give an estimate for the activity. Keep in mind that they’ll often include check-in, gearing up, training, and the ride itself in their estimate.

How Fast Do You Go Ziplining?

Ziplining speeds can range from 25mph to 100mph.

Zipline speed varies by the line’s slope, length, wind, and your weight, with many tours reaching speeds that feel fast but controlled. Some courses also have self-braking systems that let you control your speed.

How High Are Ziplines?

Zipline height varies by location and terrain, and courses can range from lower practice lines to mountain runs with major elevation drops.

Is There a Weight Limit for Ziplining?

While weight limits vary by operator, you’ll often see a minimum weight requirement of 50lbs or higher and a maximum weight in the mid to upper 200lbs.

Despite these general ranges, you should always check with the course before you sign up. Weight limits will vary by operator, as the zipline’s braking system, course design, and equipment can all affect the minimum and maximum weights.

Are There Ziplining Height Requirements?

Height requirements depend on the harness system and course design, so each operator sets their own minimum and maximum height for riders.

What to Wear Ziplining?

Wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable, weather-appropriate clothes you can move in. Avoid wearing loose accessories, and if you have long hair, make sure to have something to tie your hair back (you don’t want it getting tangled in the line!).

In most cases, you’ll want athletic or hiking-style clothing that won’t snag against your harness gear. You’ll also want to avoid skirts, dresses, dangling jewelry, and anything you’d be sad to drop mid-zip.

Can You Wear Glasses or Sunglasses While Ziplining?

Yes, you can usually wear glasses or sunglasses while ziplining, but you should secure them with a retainer strap so they don’t slip off mid-ride.

Can You Bring Your Phone While Ziplining?

It depends on the operator. Some tours allow phones if they’re fully secured, and others don’t allow phones on the course at all.

How Can You Secure Your Phone While Ziplining?

If they do allow phones, make sure it’s held inside an enclosed pouch or in a phone case attached to a cross-body strap. Those who want to record the experience should wear a GoPro (or a similar camera) on their helmet to keep their hands free throughout the ride.

How Safe Is Ziplining?

Ziplining is a very safe activity, as trusted operators require guests to attend safety orientations and wear safety gear before they can get on the zipline.

Reputable zipline courses also follow recognized industry standards for course operations and inspections to prevent accidents and keep everything working as it should.

Can You Zipline in the Rain?

Many ziplines run in light rain, but tours usually pause or reschedule when conditions become unsafe, especially during thunderstorms or high winds.

If you do go ziplining in the rain, wearing a poncho, quick-dry clothes, and closed-toe shoes with good tread can make the experience more comfortable and enjoyable.

Can Two People Zipline Together?

Most ziplines are one rider per line, but some courses let you launch at the same time on side-by-side lines.

Can Kids Go Ziplining?

Kids can zipline if they meet the tour’s age, height, and weight rules, and they can follow instructions independently during the ride.

Can Seniors Go Ziplining?

Many seniors can zipline comfortably if they meet the requirements and feel confident with basic mobility needs like standing, walking, and managing stairs.

That said, if you have concerns related to balance, heart conditions, prior injuries, or medications, it’s smart to check with your physician before booking.

Can You Zipline While Pregnant?

Most zipline tours don’t allow pregnant guests, and it’s usually best to skip it because pregnancy guidelines recommend avoiding activities with a higher fall or impact risk.

Even on a well-run course, you’re wearing a snug harness and moving at speed, which could potentially be harmful to the pregnancy. As a result, many operators make pregnancy a strict “no” for safety and liability reasons.

What Medical Restrictions Do Ziplines Have?

Most zipline operators won’t let people ride if they had a recent surgery, have certain pulmonary/heart conditions, or are pregnant. Those with chronic back and neck injuries or joint problems should also avoid ziplines.

Before you zipline, check with your doctor to make sure that it’s safe for you to ride!

How Physically Demanding Is Ziplining?

Ziplining is usually a moderate activity that requires basic mobility and the ability to stand on your feet for an extended period.

Common physical demands for ziplines include walking up stairs, standing for an hour or more, lifting your knees, and maintaining a stable position during the ride.
